Emoji Movie

I was the art director for this film.  I focused on color, lighting and surfacing while Carlos, the production designer, focused on design, camera and keeping the director and executives happy 🙂

I start most of my ideas with simple little sketches in my moleskin.  The good ones will get scanned and enlarged in PS to use as the beginnings of designs or moments.

Exploration for the look of the white streets at night.  I would have liked to have kept the black-eye look for the main characters, but the director wanted  more humanistic eyes.

One of the Apps that didn’t make it into the movie had knights in it.  I always though it would be fun to see these little yellow ball characters running around in a realistic world.

A couple of character paintings I did to establish the look.  I also created a guide for the artists on how to paint the look-dev for the characters.

COLOR SCRIPTING!!!!

Working Colorscript for the entire movie. We didn’t have much time, and the story was ever-changing, so many of the beats here are rough. Working so fast, we ended up painting individual panels and sending those directly to Imageworks. I may add them in at a later date.

This movie was an interesting challenge.  Because of the episodic nature of the story and set pieces, we decided to create hero colors for each of the main characters and for the main emotional themes, rather than a typical script that follows the story arc.  I came up with a color theory the first or second week I was on the project, and we stuck to it.  Be sure to open the images in a new window or tab to see and read the details.

Here’s a few different individual keys and sequences…
